People often have souring necks and shoulders due to the lack of neck support during commuting. Muscles of the neck will relax when we are asleep, and it will bend into a rather large angle. This will not only cause discomfort but also put people's cervical spine, nervous system, respiratory system, and even circulatory system at risk.
Although a neck pillow may be a straightforward solution, it lacks true solid support to the neck and is hard to be carried around.
Scarf X is a neck pillow that is easier to carry around than the traditional ones. It provides better support to the necks and shoulders and has a better look.
The goal is to keep the head and the neck in neutral alignment with the spine even when muscles are relaxed. Rather than designing a neck pillow right away, we looked at the essence of this problem and analyzed the drawbacks of existing products.
Since providing support to users’ necks is the primary purpose, we started to study the underlying mechanics by applying the statics theories we had learned at that time.
We found a pair of concave regions at the junction of the head and neck (blue regions), which is very suitable for head support. The second pair of support points (yellow regions) was chosen to distribute stress.
The early drafts and thermoplastic.
The original model was made by hand with thermoplastic.
At first, We use thermoplastic to make the inner structure. Later, we started to find the common points of these hand-made models and use 3D printing to make and test the prototypes.
After testing more than 30 prototypes, We came to our final design. Scarf X can provide better support and it is 86% smaller and 65% lighter than the ordinary ones. This can be achieved because the interior structure is extremely lightweight and small.
Since the interior structure is rather small, we chose a scarf as the appearance of our project. The look of a scarf is easily better than a neck pillow.
